2026 Seasonal Farmhand

Oak Slough Farm is a certified organic vegetable and cut-flower farm in Red Bluff, CA, located off Jellys Ferry Road. We sell seasonally, May through October, with about half of products going to wholesale markets and half to farmers markets (Red Bluff Wednesday night summer market and Redding Saturday morning market). We prioritize environmental stewardship, supporting other local businesses and local food access, and a quality working environment. 

JOB DESCRIPTION 

The seasonal farm hand will contribute to all aspects of vegetable production including planting, weeding, harvesting, handling, and distribution of produce. This will require attention to detail, efficiency in movement, and a willingness to work until tasks are completed. The seasonal farm  hand may also contribute to flower production, harvesting, and arranging as interest and experience allows. In general, this position will require flexibility as business needs and tasks vary with season, weather, and general growing conditions–a positive, humorous attitude is a helpful approach to the changing circumstances and needs across a season. A good candidate will enjoy working outdoors, moving efficiently through a varied work-day, and working with plants and the environment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist with crop production activities, which may include:

  • Transplanting and direct seeding
  • Weeding
  • Bed preparation, including: mulching, irrigation installation, row cover application
  • Trellising and pruning
  • Fertilizing

Assist with harvest and wash pack activities, which may include:

  • Harvesting, including moving lugs up to 30lbs for up to 500 ft
  • Following standard operating procedures to clean, sanitize, and order space and tools 
  • Wearing clothing and maintaining clean hands as appropriate for handling food
  • Following standard operating procedures to wash, sort, and pack produce to maintain produce quality standards

Contribute to general farm operations:

  • Keeping appropriate records as instructed–this is especially important for our organic certification

Additional duties may include (as interest and experience allows):

  • Flower harvesting
  • Flower arranging 
  • Working the farmers market booth
  • Product deliveries
  • Online management of social media, email, website 
  • Bookkeeping

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Interest in small-scale, sustainable farming
  • Positive and collaborative attitude
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to accept direction and constructive feedback
  • Comfort in checking with manager when unsure of best action
  • Capacity to work with a small team and be self-motivated when working alone
  • Ability to work outside for extended periods in hot, dry, and windy weather conditions
  • Ability to repeatedly lift 40-50lbs
  • Ability to stand, bend, crouch and squat for long periods of time
  • Reliable transport to farm location, 13 miles from Red Bluff, CA
  • Tobacco products must not be used on farm for risk of plant disease

WORK SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

20-40 hours per week, Monday through Friday/Saturday with exact schedule to be negotiated.

Fridays must be worked. 

June-September starts at 6am with a late morning meal/break time; day usually ends between noon and 2pm. Later start times available May and October. Exact hours can be discussed.

Compensation is $18-$20/hr depending on experience. 

This is a non-exempt employment position.

Free farm veggies and flowers included.

Transportation stipend may be arranged.
